Getting in a rut is a common experience for all of us, in any context. When we get in those ruts, where creativity and inspiration seem to elude us, it is important to remember what a "rut" is; an opportunity for self-reflection, and an opportunity to go seek out an "inspirational jolt" from the masters!
We draw our inspiration from all kinds of sources - artistic, philosophical, spiritual, great people in our lives, etc. speaking from a strictly musical perspective, however, there is one guitar player who, for me, never fails to put an immediate end to any rut within which I may find myself: The incredible, inimitable and utterly peerless Greg Koch. Listen to anything he has done, and you will experience an uncannily organic, ego-less purity to the way he speaks through his guitar. I can never get enough of his playing. In short, a quick spin of any Greg Koch recordings will pull me out of the rut, and put me squarely on a new path of musical discovery, refinement and improvement.
I often think about just how someone gets so "scary good" (as the exceptional Joe Bonamassa himself has said about Greg Koch!). I believe that, in addition to the God-given talent that he clearly has been blessed with, I believe it has a lot to do with his humble, curious, gregarious and giving spirit. If you have not viewed his videos on the Wildwood Guitars website, wherein he demos all kinds of killer guitars in Wildwood's inventory, do so immediately! There you will experience a singular talent, not just as a musician, but as a human being. When I listen to his music, I hear all of those attributes in his playing, resulting in a rich, loose and uncommonly pure musical voice.
Without going on and on about it, (or have I already?!), I'll just close by saying that the guy is freaking awesome, and a true, true inspiration for me in my efforts to get a little bit better on this six-string each and every day.
Do yourself a favor and check him out!
